Land, Probate, and Census Records
Land records for Becker County go back to the 1870s through the County Recorder. Federal land patents issued before 1908 can be searched for free at the BLM General Land Office site at glorecords.blm.gov. These records identify the original grantees of federal land. After the initial patent, the County Recorder holds deed books that trace subsequent ownership. Land records are often among the most complete records for an early county and can help you pinpoint when and where an ancestor arrived.
Probate records are held at the Probate Court and cover wills from 1908 to 1981. FamilySearch has also digitized some of these probate records and made them available online. Probate files list heirs and beneficiaries by name, which can help establish family relationships not found in birth or death records. For census records, federal censuses from 1850 through 1940 are free on FamilySearch and available through Ancestry. Minnesota state censuses are also accessible through the MHS library catalog.
